Hemmick Beach

Hemmick Beach is a relatively secluded beach on the south coast of Cornwall, located on the eastern side of the Roseland Peninsula between Mevagissey and Portloe. It sits below open farmland and low cliffs, facing St Austell Bay. The beach is less developed than many others in the area and is generally quieter, attracting visitors looking for a more isolated coastal setting.

The beach is composed mainly of coarse sand and shingle, with a gently curving shoreline and clear, sheltered waters typical of the south coast. It is backed by grassy slopes rather than built infrastructure, giving it a more natural appearance. At low tide, the beach expands slightly, although it remains relatively small compared to larger bays nearby. It is known for its calm conditions and straightforward access to the water, making it suitable for swimming in stable weather.

Access is via a narrow rural lane leading to a small car park above the beach. From there, a short path descends to the shoreline. Parking capacity is limited, and spaces can fill quickly in summer. Facilities are minimal, with no permanent services directly on the beach, although there is sometimes a seasonal café or refreshment point nearby. Visitors should be prepared for a simple, less serviced environment.

Hemmick Beach is best visited in late spring, summer and early autumn when weather conditions are more reliable. It is suitable for swimming, relaxing and short coastal visits, particularly for those seeking quieter locations. The sheltered position reduces wave exposure, but conditions can still vary with weather changes. The limited parking and lack of facilities may make it less convenient for longer stays or for visitors requiring easy access.
