Mevagissey

Mevagissey is a fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall, located between St Austell and Gorran Haven. It is centred around a double harbour and remains one of the most active fishing ports in the area. The village combines a working harbour with visitor facilities, retaining a traditional layout and character.

About Mevagissey

Mevagissey is arranged around two adjoining harbours, protected by stone breakwaters, with narrow streets rising up the surrounding slopes. The harbour remains in regular use, with fishing boats landing catches that support local businesses. The centre of the village is compact, with limited vehicle access and a network of small lanes connecting shops, cafés and quays.

The setting is enclosed compared to more open coastal towns, with views focused around the harbour rather than wide coastal stretches. The town is known for its fishing heritage and harbour activity. Nearby areas include Pentewan to the west, with a larger beach and holiday park, and the Roseland Peninsula across St Austell Bay.

Visiting Mevagissey

Access to Mevagissey is via narrow roads descending into the village, with a large car park located on the outskirts. From here, the centre is typically reached on foot or via a seasonal shuttle service. Vehicle access within the village is restricted and streets are often too narrow for through traffic.

Facilities include shops, cafés, public toilets and seasonal services focused around the harbour. The village is busiest in summer, when narrow streets and limited space can become congested. Spring and early autumn provide quieter conditions. The steep terrain and confined layout can make movement more difficult, particularly during peak periods.
