Widemouth Bay Beach

Widemouth Bay Beach is a long sandy beach located on the north coast of Cornwall, a few miles south of Bude. It stretches across a broad section of coastline and is divided into areas including Black Rock and Widemouth Bay itself. The beach faces the Atlantic and is known for its open setting and consistent coastal conditions.

The beach consists of a wide expanse of sand backed by low cliffs and grassy areas, with rock formations visible at either end. At low tide, a large area of firm sand is exposed, making it suitable for walking and general use. The coastline is exposed to Atlantic swell, producing regular waves that attract surfers and bodyboarders. Widemouth Bay is known for its size and the ability to accommodate larger numbers of visitors without feeling overly confined.

Access is straightforward, with several entry points along the coastline and car parks located near different sections of the beach. Parking availability varies by area and can be limited during peak periods. Facilities include cafés, toilets and seasonal lifeguard cover, particularly in the main beach areas. The beach is also connected to the South West Coast Path, allowing for longer walks along the coastline.

Widemouth Bay Beach can be visited throughout the year, although conditions are generally most favourable from late spring to early autumn. It is suitable for surfing, bodyboarding, walking and general beach use due to its size and accessibility. The beach can become busy in good weather, but its length allows space to spread out. Exposure to Atlantic conditions means strong waves and wind are common, and swimming should be approached with care. Tidal variation affects the usable area, with the largest expanse of sand available at low tide.
