Summerleaze Beach

Summerleaze Beach is a sandy beach located in Bude on the north coast of Cornwall, immediately west of the town centre. It sits within a partially enclosed bay formed by Bude Harbour and its breakwater, giving it a more sheltered character than some nearby beaches. The beach is closely connected to the town, with direct access from the seafront and surrounding streets.

The beach is mainly composed of sand, with some rocky areas visible at lower tide levels. Its size changes with the tide, expanding into a wide, flat area at low water and reducing at high tide. A key feature is the Bude Sea Pool at the southern end, a large tidal swimming pool built into the rocks that provides a more controlled environment for bathing. Summerleaze is known for combining general beach use with surfing, although wave conditions are often less intense than on more exposed stretches of coastline.

Access to Summerleaze Beach is straightforward, with level routes from the town and nearby car parks within a short walking distance. Several pay-and-display car parks serve the area, including options close to the beach. Facilities are well developed and include toilets, cafés, shops and equipment hire, along with seasonal lifeguard cover. The beach is easy to reach and suitable for a wide range of visitors.

Summerleaze Beach can be visited throughout the year, with summer offering more stable weather and calmer conditions for general use. It is well suited to families, swimming and beginner surfing, with the sea pool providing an alternative to open water. The central location means it can become busy during peak periods. Although partially sheltered, the beach remains affected by changing sea conditions, and care is required when swimming outside the pool. Tidal changes influence the amount of available sand, particularly at high tide.
