St Michael’s Mount

St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island located off the coast of Marazion in west Cornwall. It is one of the county’s most recognisable landmarks, featuring a historic castle, church and small harbour settlement. The site has been used for religious, defensive and residential purposes over several centuries and is now managed in partnership with the National Trust. It remains a major visitor attraction in Cornwall.

The island rises steeply from the sea, with the castle and gardens positioned at the summit and a small village clustered around the harbour below. A stone causeway connects the island to the mainland at low tide, allowing access on foot. At high tide, visitors reach the island by boat. The castle interior includes furnished rooms and historical displays, while the terraced gardens contain a range of subtropical plants supported by the mild coastal climate. Elevated viewpoints provide wide views across Mount’s Bay.

Access to St Michael’s Mount is from Marazion, where several public car parks are available within walking distance of the causeway. Entry to the island itself is free, but tickets are required to visit the castle and gardens. Facilities include cafés, shops and toilets both on the mainland and on the island. The causeway surface is uneven in places, and the climb to the castle is steep, which may affect accessibility for some visitors.

The best time to visit is outside peak summer months or early in the day to avoid congestion. Tide times should be checked in advance, as they determine whether access is by foot or by boat. The attraction is suitable for most visitors, including families, although the steep paths and steps may be challenging for those with limited mobility. Weather conditions can also affect comfort, particularly in exposed areas.

Nearby, Marazion Beach provides a long stretch of sand with views back towards the island, while Penzance offers additional facilities, shops and transport links. The South West Coast Path runs along this section of coastline, providing walking routes with views across Mount’s Bay. Further west, Praa Sands offers a larger open beach popular for walking and general use.
