Porthgwidden Beach

Porthgwidden Beach is a small sandy beach located in St Ives on the north coast of Cornwall, positioned on the eastern side of the town near St Ives Harbour. It sits below the Island headland and is more sheltered than the larger beaches facing the open Atlantic. Its central location and calmer conditions make it a convenient option for visitors staying in the town.

The beach consists of a compact area of sand with some rocky edges, particularly visible at low tide. It is enclosed by low cliffs and buildings, giving it a more contained setting than nearby beaches such as Porthmeor. The sheltered position reduces wave exposure, resulting in generally calmer water. The beach is known for swimming and relaxed use rather than surfing.

Access is straightforward from St Ives town centre via short pedestrian routes and steps. There is no direct parking at the beach, but several car parks are located within walking distance of the harbour area. Facilities include a café and toilets nearby, along with other services available in the town. The beach is easy to reach on foot, although access routes may involve steps and narrow streets.

Porthgwidden Beach can be visited throughout the year, with the most favourable conditions during warmer months. It is particularly suitable for swimming, families and short visits due to its sheltered location and proximity to amenities. The beach can become busy in summer, especially given its limited size. Tidal variation affects the available space, with a reduced area at high tide and more exposed sand at lower levels.
