Lantic Bay is a secluded beach on the south coast of Cornwall, located between Polruan and Polperro and accessed from the small hamlet of Pencarrow Head. It lies below steep cliffs and farmland, facing St Austell Bay. The beach is less visited than nearby coastal areas due to its access, giving it a quieter and more remote character.
The beach is formed of sand and shingle, with a curved shoreline enclosed by high cliffs on either side. At low tide, a larger area of sand is exposed, while at high tide the beach becomes narrow. The water is typically calmer than on the north coast, although conditions can still change with weather. Lantic Bay is known for its clear water and undeveloped setting, with no buildings or facilities directly on the beach.
Access involves a walk from the National Trust car park near Pencarrow Head, followed by a steep and uneven path descending to the beach. The route can be slippery in wet conditions and requires reasonable fitness. Parking is limited and fills quickly in peak season. There are no facilities at the beach, so visitors need to bring provisions and be prepared for a simple environment.
Lantic Bay is best visited in good weather during late spring and summer when the path is dry and sea conditions are more stable. It is suitable for swimming, short visits and coastal walking, particularly for those seeking quieter locations. The steep access and lack of amenities make it less practical for families with young children or large amounts of equipment. Tidal variation significantly affects the available space, and the beach is most usable at mid to low tide.
