Great Western Beach (Newquay)

Great Western Beach is a sandy beach located in Newquay on the north coast of Cornwall, positioned just east of Towan Beach and below the town centre. It lies beneath cliffs and is accessed by a steep path, giving it a slightly more enclosed feel than some of the more open beaches nearby. Despite its central location, it tends to feel less exposed than larger bays.

The beach is relatively small compared to others in Newquay, with a mix of sand and some rocky areas revealed at low tide. It is backed by steep cliffs and faces north-west, receiving consistent Atlantic swell. At low tide, the beach connects with Towan Beach, creating a wider area of sand. It is known for its reliable surf conditions and its more sheltered position within the town’s coastline.

Access is via steps and a sloping path from the town above, which can be steep in places. Parking is available in Newquay town centre, with several car parks within walking distance. Facilities are limited directly on the beach, although there are seasonal services and nearby cafés and shops in the town. The access route may be less suitable for those with limited mobility or large amounts of equipment.

Great Western Beach can be visited throughout the year, with the best conditions typically from late spring to early autumn. It is suitable for surfing, bodyboarding and general beach use, particularly for those staying nearby. The beach can become busy in summer, although it is often quieter than Towan Beach. Tidal changes have a significant impact, with limited space at high tide and a much larger usable area at low tide.
