Harlyn Bay

Harlyn Bay is a sandy beach located on the north coast of Cornwall, near Padstow on the Trevose Head peninsula. It sits within a broad, open bay but is partially sheltered by surrounding headlands, giving it more moderate conditions than more exposed Atlantic beaches nearby. The beach has a relatively accessible and contained character, with direct proximity to the small settlement of Harlyn.

The beach is made up of fine sand with a gently sloping profile, creating a wide and usable surface that expands further at low tide. Compared to other north coast beaches, wave conditions are often more controlled due to the shape of the bay, making it suitable for a range of water activities. The surrounding landscape includes low cliffs and grassy headlands, with views towards Trevose Head. Harlyn Bay is known for its suitability for beginner surfers and for general swimming conditions in calmer weather.

Access to Harlyn Bay is straightforward, with a road leading directly to the beach and several nearby car parks within a short walking distance. The beach can be reached easily from these parking areas via short, level paths. Facilities are well developed and include toilets, cafés and equipment hire, along with seasonal lifeguard cover. The beach is generally easy to visit and suitable for a wide range of users.

Harlyn Bay can be visited throughout the year, with summer providing more stable weather and calmer sea conditions. It is well suited to families, beginner surfers and swimming, particularly when conditions are moderate. The partial shelter reduces the impact of strong Atlantic swells, although wind and waves can still increase during unsettled periods. Tidal changes affect the size of the beach but do not significantly restrict access. Care is still required when swimming due to changing sea conditions.
