Porthminster Beach

Porthminster Beach is a sandy beach located in St Ives on the north coast of Cornwall. It lies to the east of the town centre and faces St Ives Bay, offering a more sheltered setting compared to the more exposed beaches on the Atlantic-facing coastline. The beach is one of the main beaches serving the town and is widely used by both visitors and local residents.

The beach consists of a wide stretch of sand, particularly at low tide, with generally calm water conditions due to its orientation within the bay. It is backed by a promenade, gardens and the St Ives railway line, which runs along the rear of the beach. The setting provides open views across the bay towards Godrevy Lighthouse in the distance. The beach is known for its accessible layout and relatively gentle conditions.

Access is straightforward from St Ives town centre, with paths and roads leading directly to the beachfront. The nearby railway station is located within walking distance, making it one of the more accessible beaches by public transport. Parking in St Ives is limited and often located further from the beach, requiring a short walk or use of park and ride services. Facilities include cafés, toilets and equipment hire, all located close to the beach.

Porthminster Beach can be visited throughout the year, although conditions are most favourable during warmer months. It is particularly suitable for families, swimming and general use due to its sheltered position and sandy surface. The beach can become busy during peak periods, especially in summer. Tides significantly affect the available space, with a much larger area exposed at low tide.
