Polperro

Polperro is a coastal village located on the south coast of Cornwall, between Looe and Fowey. It is set within a narrow valley that leads down to a small harbour, giving it a compact and enclosed character. The village developed as a fishing and smuggling port and retains much of its traditional layout, with limited vehicle access in the centre.

About Polperro

The village is arranged along steep, narrow streets that follow the line of the valley down to the harbour. Buildings are closely spaced, with cottages, shops and cafés concentrated near the waterfront. The harbour is small and sheltered, still used by fishing boats and small craft. Much of the central area is pedestrianised, contributing to its preserved appearance. Nearby locations include Looe to the west and Fowey further east, both accessible by road or coastal paths.

Beaches in Polperro

Polperro itself has limited beach space, but several nearby locations offer more suitable areas for beach use.

Polperro Harbour Beach – Small sandy and rocky area within the harbour, mainly visible at low tide and suited to short visits.

Talland Bay – Sandy and shingle beach a short distance west, with relatively sheltered conditions and access by road or coastal path.

Looe Beach – Larger sandy beach in nearby Looe, suitable for families, swimming and general beach use.

Lantic Bay – Secluded sandy cove further east, accessed by a steep path, with clear water and limited facilities.

South West Coast Path – Coastal walking route passing through Polperro, linking nearby bays and headlands.

Visiting Polperro

Polperro is accessed via local roads from the A38, with vehicle access restricted in the centre. Parking is located in a main car park above the village, with a walk or shuttle service required to reach the harbour. The steep and narrow streets can make access more difficult, particularly for those with limited mobility. Facilities include cafés, shops and accommodation, although space is limited.

The village can be visited throughout the year, with summer being the busiest period. It is well suited to short visits, walking and exploring the harbour and surrounding coastline. During peak periods, it can become crowded and access more restricted. Outside summer, it is quieter and easier to explore, although weather conditions may be more changeable.
